Ethical Decision Making

The ETHICAL DECISION MAKING MODEL is something that EVERYone should know about. If you already knew about this method, we’re sure it’s proving to be useful.  For those unenlightened, here’s how it can help:

  • it makes sure you find out all information and consider all actions and outcomes before you open your mouth and make a tricky situation potentially worse

  • it helps you quickly identify a situation where someone hasn’t used this model before they open their mouth and make a tricky situation potentially worse!

Sensible scenarios to implement the ethical decision making model before jumping in the deep end include:

🤨 Your garden hose is cut again and you’re pretty sure the teen next door smokes pot.

😠 Your alcohol supply seems depleted and you don’t trust your daughter's boyfriend.

😳 You saw your best friend's teenage daughter buying condoms.

😔 A teenager you care about in the community is taking drugs and you want to help.

The ethical decision making model takes the emotion out of a call to action.  It makes you STOP, LOOK LEFT, LOOK RIGHT and LOOK LEFT AGAIN, think and consider.

Designed to help avoid making a wrong decision, or a decision made under pressure, the model is often used in the health care and education sectors.

There are many example models for ethical decision making.  Here is a clear and logical example from the Dept of Education in Victoria.  It is informative and simple to understand.  EPIC encourages you to visit the website to read the full explanation for each step.

The ethical decision making model is a strategy for life.  Conundrums can be approached in a considered and methodical manner, taking the anxiety out of confronting and everyday decisions.

Implementing this method will have you feeling better knowing you are making decisions ethically and with confidence!
